From the vine to the bottle, the role of the vineyard worker in quality

The vineyard workers role in producing quality wines is largely unrecognised with most of the acclaim going to the winemaker. Werner Muller, the Iona winemaker and most modest of individuals, inevitably, when complimented on his wines gives credit to the vineyard and those who work it. Iona, Klein Constantia and Newton Johnson all make use of Kevin Watt as consultant viticulturist. The presentation will go through the important role of the vineyard worker including planting, training, suckering, leaf breaking, vineyard health, harvest, etc and the impact on quality will be demonstrated in the wines tasted.
The Future of organic wine in South Africa

Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon/ Cinsault blends: Fashion or Future?

Blended or pure, Cabernet Sauvignon has for long been king in Stellenbosch. Before 1990, Cinsaut was often used to increase volumes of the then scarce Cabernet and made blends of great poise and longevity, but has since lost favour to Merlot. Does this blend still have a place in the South African story and should we not be placing more emphasis on it?

Cool Cape Agulhas

What makes Cool Cape Agulhas different? As the meeting place of the two oceans and most vineyards only 15 km from the ocean the predominant southerly summer winds blow cool air directly from the cold Atlantic ocean into the vineyards. The sparse gravel soils together with the constant wind limits vigorous growth and rather gives natural small yields with smaller berries with intense flavors. Indeed a very unique “southern triangle” with exceptional wines.
